The birth control shot is a contraceptive method injected intramuscularly every three months. It has a slow-release form and it normally contains one type of hormone only: progesterone. The main impact of this hormone is to prevent ovulation, meaning that there will be no egg release monthly.

In comparison with the hormonal pill, the birth control shot has a higher efficiency range. While with the pill, 8 in 100 couples get pregnant yearly, the rate is only 3 in 100 per year in the case of the birth control shot. Yet, if you wait longer than three months before you get the next shot, chances of getting pregnant are higher.

There is no protection against sexually transmitted diseases with the birth control shot. Plus, there are physiological changes that could be an inconvenience while using this birth control method. Normally included in the list of adverse reactions, you could be experiencing:

-irregular menstrual periods;
-headaches, breast tenderness and weight gain;
-mood changes and depression.

Most of these problems disappear with the cessation of the treatment, yet, you may have to battle against overweight fiercely afterwards. There are some further serious warnings related to the long-term usage of the progesterone injection. Thus, studies indicate that it increases the incidence of loss in bone density which could lead to osteoporosis.

In case you decide that the birth control shot is a good option for you, talk to your health care provider and make sure that your daily calcium intake is enough to support the hormonal treatment without loss of bone density. Moreover, fertility may be harder to recover after the long term use of the birth control shot. The fertility problem is not permanent, and women can recover in time, but difficulties could appear along the way.

We should also expose some health issues or conditions that make the use of the birth control shot problematic. You should not administer it if you suffer from any of the following:

-migraine;
-blood clots;
-unexplained vaginal bleeding;
-thrombosis;
-cancer;
-suspected pregnancy.

The costs of the birth control shot are moderate, and they are often covered by the health insurance plan. You just need to contact your doctor's office and find out what you need to do in order to have access to such birth control treatment.

Last but not least, when using some other drugs or herbal supplements, it is important to rely on a supplementary birth control method because the risk of interferences leaves you unprotected against pregnancy.

Birth control side effects are usually reported for the use of hormone-based methods. Pills are normally characterized by a lower tolerance level, but individual factors have the biggest influence under the circumstances. Here are the most common side effects exposed, yet, regardless of how mild they may seem, they ought to be reported to the doctor if they do not cease after the period of time specified in the usage instructions.

Breast tenderness, dizziness and headaches are usually transitory birth control side effects. Once the accommodation period passes, these inconveniences ought to go away. The same thing will happen with nausea, although this adverse reaction is less frequent. You can deal with the problem if you take the hormonal pill with food. In case the side effects do not cease and you are in a good health condition, the doctor may suggest a switch of brands.

Spotting or breakthrough bleeding is the most common of hormonal birth control side effects, yet it is also the most annoying. The incidence of this inconvenience could be reduced if you take the pill at the same time every day. Normally, spotting diminishes and disappears within the first month of pill usage, but the list of side effects mentions it as potentially bothersome for up to two months.

Further birth control side effects associated with the use of combined estrogen and progesterone, include mood swings. It is important to run medical tests and determine whether the birth control pill is to blame for depression. If it is indeed behind the problem, the pill will not work for you in general. Try non-hormonal birth control methods that have fewer adverse reactions.

The birth control side effects are more intense and potentially health ruining if they appear with smokers, women over 35 or those with a medical condition. For a perfectly healthy woman, birth control side effects will just characterize the body's adjustment to the hormonal intake. Weight gain should not be an issue while on hormonal pills although such side effects have sometimes been reported by users suffering from pre-existing hormonal imbalances.

Very serious birth control side effects are blurred vision, abdominal cramps, unexplained severe headaches, numbness in the limbs and chest pain. You should stop the treatment right away and address an emergency health care facility immediately. Report any other abnormal symptoms to the gynecologist. Do not use birth control pills without prescription because you could seriously endanger your health.

The birth control ring is a local device made of a soft and flexible material that is inserted in the vagina. It slowly releases hormones into the blood stream so as to influence the uterus and the ovaries and thus prevent pregnancy. The birth control ring contains two main ingredients: progesterone and estrogen, both with a role in the function of the reproductive system. The effect consists in the blocking of the ovulation, which means that no egg is released in the uterus. Another anatomical modification consist in the thickening of the cervical mucus and the changes in the uterine lining.

The ring is inserted in the vagina on the first day of the monthly bleeding and it remains there for three weeks in a row. It should be removed on the same day of the week when it was inserted. For the following seven days it will not be used, and the period will appear. Then, the cycle continues. The similarity is very high with regular hormonal treatments. Yet, you should read the usage instructions carefully so as to make certain that you don't overlook something. Mention must be made that the birth control ring is not efficient for the first seven days after the start of the treatment.

During this interval, the birth control ring needs to be used in parallel with some other birth control method: condom, most of the time. It is important to know that the ring will not protect you against sexually transmitted disease. As for the physical comfort, lots of girls and women wonder whether the ring will not be a problem. Normally, since the position in the vagina is not important, the ring can be placed as you consider more comfortable. You should not feel it as you don't feel a vaginal tampon. Leave it in place when swimming, bathing or during intercourse.

The efficiency rate of the birth control ring is similar to that of the combined hormonal pill. Yet, you may not be able to use it if you suffer from certain health conditions. Only a health care provider can determine whether the birth control ring is a good solution for you or not. There are fewer side effects than with the use of hormonal pills, but they can be aggravated for smokers and girls with a certain medical history. Mood changes, spotting, headaches and dizziness are a few of the most common reactions to the use of the birth control ring. Normally, the inconvenience is temporary and corresponds to the transition period.

The birth control pill represents one of the most efficient contraceptive methods available. It is administered by women and it consists of a combination of hormones that control the release of the eggs from the ovaries into the uterus. And it works as follows:

-It combines estrogen and progesterone, the two hormones that inhibit ovulation. Without ovulation there is no chance of pregnancy.

-It thickens the cervical mucus preventing the sperm from entering the uterus.

-It modifies the lining in the uterus making it unsuitable for the implantation of the egg.

The birth control pill has to be taken daily, preferably at the same hour, for twenty one days. During the seven days when there is no hormonal administration, the period appears. The pills are available either in 21 or in 28 pill packages. For the 28-pill package, the last seven pills are inactive, meaning that they contain no hormones at all.

Benefits of taking the birth control pill!
-The monthly bleeding is less intense.
-The pre-menstrual discomfort is seriously alleviated.
-Fertility is preserved, and it is totally reversible when you stop taking the pill.
-Hormonal imbalances may be treated.
-It prevents some forms of cancer.

There is one special kind of birth control pill that contains active hormones for 12 weeks and then inactive pills for a week. This means that the frequency of the period will be reduced to one in three months.

Yet, another type of birth control pill is the mini-pill. It contains progesterone only, and it has to be taken daily without any interruption, preferably at the same time every day regardless of whether you have sex or not. The efficiency of the mini-pill is considered inferior to the combined birth control pill.

The efficiency range of the birth control pill is very high, although 8 out of 100 couples face an unexpected pregnancy yearly, despite the use of this treatment. The chances of getting pregnant increase if you fail to take the pill daily, or you take it at random hours. Plus, there are some individual factors at work here, and they also influence the efficiency of the medication.

For example, the birth control pill may not work well if you follow some other herbal or medical treatment and there are interferences between the drugs. Moreover, the incidence of side effects should not be overlooked. Read carefully about the possible adverse reactions to the birth control pill, as well as the health conditions that make the use of the pill very risky. Only start a hormonal birth control treatment following doctor's orders!
