The birth control shot is a contraceptive method injected intramuscularly every three months. It has a slow-release form and it normally contains one type of hormone only: progesterone. The main impact of this hormone is to prevent ovulation, meaning that there will be no egg release monthly.

In comparison with the hormonal pill, the birth control shot has a higher efficiency range. While with the pill, 8 in 100 couples get pregnant yearly, the rate is only 3 in 100 per year in the case of the birth control shot. Yet, if you wait longer than three months before you get the next shot, chances of getting pregnant are higher.

There is no protection against sexually transmitted diseases with the birth control shot. Plus, there are physiological changes that could be an inconvenience while using this birth control method. Normally included in the list of adverse reactions, you could be experiencing:

-irregular menstrual periods;
-headaches, breast tenderness and weight gain;
-mood changes and depression.

Most of these problems disappear with the cessation of the treatment, yet, you may have to battle against overweight fiercely afterwards. There are some further serious warnings related to the long-term usage of the progesterone injection. Thus, studies indicate that it increases the incidence of loss in bone density which could lead to osteoporosis.

In case you decide that the birth control shot is a good option for you, talk to your health care provider and make sure that your daily calcium intake is enough to support the hormonal treatment without loss of bone density. Moreover, fertility may be harder to recover after the long term use of the birth control shot. The fertility problem is not permanent, and women can recover in time, but difficulties could appear along the way.

We should also expose some health issues or conditions that make the use of the birth control shot problematic. You should not administer it if you suffer from any of the following:

-migraine;
-blood clots;
-unexplained vaginal bleeding;
-thrombosis;
-cancer;
-suspected pregnancy.

The costs of the birth control shot are moderate, and they are often covered by the health insurance plan. You just need to contact your doctor's office and find out what you need to do in order to have access to such birth control treatment.

Last but not least, when using some other drugs or herbal supplements, it is important to rely on a supplementary birth control method because the risk of interferences leaves you unprotected against pregnancy.

Natural family planning requires a lot of sexual awareness and plenty of knowledge on the body mechanisms that rule fertility. It takes two to implement natural family planning strategies, and both life partners should get training for all sorts of methods related to this form of birth control. The same methods used for the prevention of pregnancy can also be applied the other way round, when the couple is trying to conceive. Among the most common options here we can mention tests for ovulation, the monitoring of the cervical mucus, the basal temperature method, the standard days method, and even computer fertility tests and charts.

Natural family planning is easy to understand and put into practice, plus, it is totally inexpensive. Yet, it requires good communication with the life partner as well as willingness to accept the eventual limitations of the method. There are around ten days every month when sexual intercourse without birth control may result in pregnancy. You should either abstain or use some other birth control method. Mention must be made that natural family planning does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, therefore, it should be used only if you know your partner very well. Condoms are the only ones that can stop STD.

For the efficient use of natural family planning, a woman has to interpret her fertility on a daily basis. Moreover, it is not advisable to choose natural birth control methods when you know that you don't want a child, and the possibility of getting pregnant seems devastating. Therefore, if a possible pregnancy would not be such a disaster for you, natural family planning could be taken more lightly. The effectiveness of the method totally depends on how accurate and precise the woman is with the determination of the fertile period of the month.

Statistics indicate that in case of perfect usage, the effectiveness of natural family planning ranges between 95% and 98%, which is actually higher than that of oral contraceptives. Yet, if we are to discuss not the perfect user but the average user, the efficiency rate drops somewhere between 75% and 88%. These data are closer to reality because few people who use natural family planning, actually follow all the rules correctly.

Who uses natural family planning? Such birth control options are very popular with people who do not use other contraceptive methods because of some religious or cultural beliefs. There are also couples that prefer to stay natural and accept the potential risk of conceiving. In fact, for lots of people who try natural family planning, a baby would not be a mistake or a problem.

The birth control ring is a local device made of a soft and flexible material that is inserted in the vagina. It slowly releases hormones into the blood stream so as to influence the uterus and the ovaries and thus prevent pregnancy. The birth control ring contains two main ingredients: progesterone and estrogen, both with a role in the function of the reproductive system. The effect consists in the blocking of the ovulation, which means that no egg is released in the uterus. Another anatomical modification consist in the thickening of the cervical mucus and the changes in the uterine lining.

The ring is inserted in the vagina on the first day of the monthly bleeding and it remains there for three weeks in a row. It should be removed on the same day of the week when it was inserted. For the following seven days it will not be used, and the period will appear. Then, the cycle continues. The similarity is very high with regular hormonal treatments. Yet, you should read the usage instructions carefully so as to make certain that you don't overlook something. Mention must be made that the birth control ring is not efficient for the first seven days after the start of the treatment.

During this interval, the birth control ring needs to be used in parallel with some other birth control method: condom, most of the time. It is important to know that the ring will not protect you against sexually transmitted disease. As for the physical comfort, lots of girls and women wonder whether the ring will not be a problem. Normally, since the position in the vagina is not important, the ring can be placed as you consider more comfortable. You should not feel it as you don't feel a vaginal tampon. Leave it in place when swimming, bathing or during intercourse.

The efficiency rate of the birth control ring is similar to that of the combined hormonal pill. Yet, you may not be able to use it if you suffer from certain health conditions. Only a health care provider can determine whether the birth control ring is a good solution for you or not. There are fewer side effects than with the use of hormonal pills, but they can be aggravated for smokers and girls with a certain medical history. Mood changes, spotting, headaches and dizziness are a few of the most common reactions to the use of the birth control ring. Normally, the inconvenience is temporary and corresponds to the transition period.

The morning after pill is also known under the name of emergency contraception, because women use it after unprotected intercourse or when another birth control method fails. The same hormones present in the regular birth control pill are used in the morning after pill with the only mention that the concentration of the ingredients is a bit higher. The morning after pill should not replace a regular birth control method, because used frequently it can seriously impair health.

The morning after pill should be used as soon as possible after you have unprotected sex. Yet, you have a three or five day interval to administer it and still prevent a pregnancy. Manufacturers nevertheless warn that the efficiency can be influenced by the moment when you actually administer it. Do not mistake this birth control method for the abortion pill, because this is not the effect it produces. Its action at the level of the reproductive system consist in the prevention of the ovulation and the alteration of the womb lining so as to become unsuitable for egg nesting.

The efficiency rate is high and the chances of side effects are pretty reduced. The usual adverse reactions to hormonal treatments may appear nonetheless: nausea, headaches, breast tenderness and spotting. Read the list of side effects carefully as all packages have detailed specification on this matter. The morning after pill should not be used by women who suffer from severe liver disease or porphyria. There are also drugs and herbal supplements that interact with the morning after pill decreasing its efficiency.

Contact the general practitioner right away to have a drug prescription. Do specify that you need the morning after pill urgently, in order not to be appointed for some later date. The sooner you act, the higher the risk of unwanted pregnancy. In some states, you can also buy the morning after pill without prescription. The only downside is the cost, as the prices are a lot higher in pharmacies. Emergency contraception can be accessed freely with certain organizations, but you need to know where to call.

Be aware of the fact that the morning after pill does not offer protection for the rest of the menstrual cycle, and you still have to use some birth control. Do not use more emergency contraceptives in the same month because of the health risks that hormonal imbalances could lead to. Either abstain from sex or rely on some serious birth control method.

The birth control patch is a dermal birth control product that prevents pregnancy by releasing hormones through the skin. The combined ingredients in a birth control patch are estrogens and progesterones, with a direct action on the ovulation. A woman will not ovulate while wearing the patch, which means that no egg will be released in the uterus and the sperm will encounter nothing to fertilize. The birth control patch also acts by thickening the cervical mucus and thus preventing the sperm to reach the eggs.

Very similar in action with other hormonal contraceptive methods, the birth control patch is effective based on the monthly menstrual cycle. A birth control patch is put on the skin on the first day of the menstrual cycle, and it will have to be changed on the same day the following week. If it is changed for three weeks in a row, the period will regularly appear on the fourth. The birth control patch can be worn on the abdomen, the back, the upper arm, the torso, the buttocks but not on the breasts.

The birth control patch should not be used on red irritated skin, and when changes occur, it should not be placed on the exact same location. You may wear it while bathing or swimming without any problem, yet you should not remove to reposition it because it will lose stickiness and it will fall off easily. Do not apply the birth control patch over powder, lotions or makeup because it will lose stickiness. Plus, skincare products could impair the absorption of hormones through the skin.

For first time users, during the first seven days of usage require some supplementary birth control method. Moreover, in case you no longer wish to wear the patch, it is important to get another birth control solution because there is no extended protection against unplanned pregnancy. As for efficiency, it seems that the birth control patch is just as effective as the hormonal pill, if used correctly.

Among the possible side effects that accompany the use of the birth control patch we can mention irregular menstrual bleeding, headaches, dizziness, skin reactions because of the application, intolerance of contact lenses, mood changes and lots of others. Sexually active young women are the perfect candidates for the use of this birth control method, but only if they weigh less than 90 kilograms. For overweight women, the hormonal concentration may be insufficient.

Birth control helps couples prevent unplanned pregnancies, and some methods also provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases. While in the past birth control used to apply mainly to women, men also have choices. The birth control methods are very numerous and although the condom is probably the best known, many stable couples choose other options. Before moving on to have a brief look over the main birth control possibilities, we need to emphasize the fact that they ought to be chosen considering several factors.

Are you involved in a stable relationship?

Do you change partners frequently?

When do you plan to have a baby?

Have you run any medical tests to assess the health condition?

How often do you have sex?

What is the efficiency level of method? Are there side effects?

People who have occasional sex partners should always use condoms not only for birth control but also for protection against sexually transmitted diseases. If you have been in a long-term relationship and you think you can trust your partner, you can discuss other birth control methods such as hormonal pills, barriers, sterilization, intra-uterine devices (IUDs) and so on.

The pros and cons of a birth control methods should be discussed with the health care provider. In some cases, there are major health benefits in some and high risks in others. The effectiveness of the method often comes into discussion. You should be aware of the fact that no birth control method other than abstinence (the choice of not having sex) has a 100% efficiency rate. Some people would even go to the length of combining several birth control methods to be certain that no unwanted pregnancy occurs.

The choice of a birth control method is very difficult for women in more special conditions. There are age problems when the female is too young or when she is too old reaching the perimenopause, health problems when some chronic disease prevents the use of regular birth control options or disabilities that make the challenges even more difficult to cope with.

In addition to conventional birth control methods, there is also emergency contraception. Two pills are administered within five days from the unprotected sexual intercourse, and they are usually taken 12 hours apart. The effect is similar with that of regular hormonal birth control, although the efficiency rate is between 75% and 85%. There are limitations and a higher risk of side effects associated with emergency contraception.

Fertility awareness inevitably leads to natural birth control. There are many couples out there who for one reason or another cannot use hormonal contraceptives, and prefer to combine natural family planning with some non-traditional birth control method. The ovulation method, the rhythm method, the standard days method, the sympto-thermal method are just a few of the natural birth control options people rely on. Here is how each of these works.

The standard days method

According to this type of natural birth control, the menstrual cycle is divided into three main periods. Day number 1 is the first day of the period. Between day 1 and day 8, you are unlikely to get pregnant and you can have sex without birth control. Between day 9 and day 18, ovulation takes place and you are fertile. You should not have sex, or you should use another birth control method. From day 20 to day 32, you can once again enjoy natural birth control.

The ovulation method

A woman can recognize when ovulation is about to begin by the changes in the cervical mucus, yet, it is often hard to tell. Ovulation usually takes place between the 9th and the 18th day of the menstrual cycle, with variations from woman to woman. If you prefer natural birth control, you can use the fertility tests available in drug stores to learn when you are most fertile, and use extra birth control during that period or abstain from sex.

The sympto-thermal method

This natural birth control method requires the careful monitoring of the changes in the basal temperature throughout the menstrual cycle. It is a bit more difficult to keep track of the subtle changes in the body, which is why women who want to get pregnant are keener on this method than those who seek natural birth control.

The big disadvantage of natural birth control is that it cannot offer any guarantees. There is a lot of unpredictable in the way a woman's body behaves during the menstrual cycle, and in many cases unplanned pregnancies have appeared like this. If the menstrual pattern is regular, then the efficiency of natural birth control methods is very high, just like that of hormonal birth control. Talk to your physician about the options you have, and see what he/she advises for. Professional advice could simplify your choices a lot, and good information could save you from an unwanted pregnancy!
