If you figure out a way to burn 3,500 calories, you will decrease your weight by 1 pound. This is where the calorie counting comes in. If you could devise a plan to cut out 500 calories out of your daily diet by eating less or exercising, you will lose a pound every week. This is a lot easier than it sounds. You could easily achieve this goal by avoiding a can of soda which is about 200 calories and a slice of pizza which is about 300 calories.
