Medically speaking erectile dysfunction (ED), which was called impotence until 10-15 years ago, covers the full range of male sexual challenges including lack of libido and orgasm difficulties which may be too soon or too delayed. For many men erectile dysfunction simply means they can't obtain or keep a firm erection.
At some point in their lives most men come across these problems. Generally speaking the problems have to occur for longer than 2 months to be classed as needing treatment from your doctor. The incidence of impotence increases as you get older but around 15% - 20% of men may be affected. .
Some Impotence Causes
It was thought that the brain was the culprit for poor performance. This is simply wrong. Physical problems are the main reasons. The commonest are diabetes both type 1 and 2, chronic kidney disease, alcohol problems, narrowing of the arteries, which reduces the flow of blood, and of course heart problems. Other reasons include neurological damage typically after surgery, a brain attack or stroke, trauma and road traffic accidents.
Medications used to treat medical conditions can have an unfortunate side effect of ED. Typically the commonest medications are beta blockers, some types of anti depressant drugs, anti histamines often used against hay fever, some tranquillisers and some stomach ulcer treatments.
An excessive lifestyle with too much food, drink, alcohol and cigarettes combined with too little exercise is also implicated in impotency problems.
The brain does have a part to play and your psychology can affect performance. Guilt, being stressed out, too tired and being down are all potential blocks to full sexual activities.
How Is Impotence Treated?
Drug treatments
Nowadays the most popular treatment is prescription drugs. There are 3 main medication used and they are the drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. All three work in the same way by inhibiting a substance called phosphodiesterase. After taking them the flow of blood to your penis increases and an erection results. As tablets they are easy to swallow and take effect in 15 - 60 min's.
There are other drugs that were around before the big three and they include papaverine hydrochloride, phentolamine, and alprostadil (known as Caverject). On the whole they are not very popular and have been eclipsed by Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
A slightly different drug is called Muse, which is a small tablet. You don't swallow it, you push it into urethra (the hole your wee comes out of) and it gives you an erection.
Other Treatment Options
Many men find the old fashioned but effective vacuum pump and band round the penis gives them very acceptable results.
A change of prescription medication may be useful as most chronic conditions can be treated in a variety of ways buy your doctor must OK it.
The longer term changes you can do include stop smoking, drink less alcohol, get a bit more exercise and lose some weight. It'll leave you feeling great as well as helping erectile dysfunction.
